Box Score

NEWARK, NJ—The NJIT women's tennis team concluded the non-conference portion of its schedule with a 5-2 win over Stony Brook Thursday evening in The Naimoli Family Athletic and Recreational Facility.

NJIT (7-6) earned the doubles point with wins at first and third doubles and notched wins at second, third, fifth and sixth singles to earn the 5-2 victory.

"I would like to thank my team for all the effort and the fighting spirit they showed today," head coach Zaki Abdelrahman  added after the win.  "Today's win was very important for a couple of reasons: Stony Brook is a strong team that defeated us 6-1 last year, so it's good to see how much the team has developed this year. Also, I am glad to see the women had enough confidence to bounce back after our last dramatic loss in New Orleans and come up with this strong win. We are ready for our ASUN Conference match on Saturday."

Highlander pair Holly Matson and Rafaella Sampaio combined for a 6-1 win at first doubles.  The pair was double winners on the day as Matson won in straight sets, 6-4, 7-5 at the third spot and Sampaio, fought out a three-set victory, 6-3, 2-6, 7-6 (4) at the fifth spot.

NJIT's Mayar Eltony and Alba Rosas Garcia notched a 6-1 victory at third doubles.  Eltony was a straight set winner at second singles, 6-1, 6-2.

Highlander Amanda Helminsky battled out a three-set tilt at sixth singles, 6-3, 4-6, 6-1 to earn a point for NJIT.

NJIT will return to action on Saturday at 1pm when the Highlanders welcome ASUN opponent USC Upstate.
