Women’s Tennis Tops Binghamton; Registers Second Consecutive Win

Box Score

NEWARK, NJ—The NJIT women's tennis team registered its second consecutive win with a convincing, 6-1, victory over visiting Binghamton Sunday afternoon at The Naimoli Family Athletic and Recreational Facility.

NJIT, which bounced back to the win column after a 4-3 win over Seton Hall on Friday evening, move to an even 3-3 mark on the young season with the win.

The Highlanders swept the doubles contests and were victorious in second through sixth singles to secure the 6-1 win.

"Glad to see the team winning its second match in a row this weekend," head coach Zaki Abdelrahman commented. "They started on top of every point until the end. Winning the doubles point definitely helped with winning the singles with more confidence.  Very happy to see Rafaella (Sampaio) and the freshman Advaita (Saravanan) winning their third singles in a row and seeing them developing every match."

Highlander duo Holly Matson and Rafaella Sampaio were double winners on the day, posting a 6-2 victory at first doubles.  Matson was a 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 winner at the third spot, topping Michelle Eisenberg.  Sampaio was a straight set winner at fourth singles, 6-3, 6-2, over Ashley Granieri.

NJIT pair Mayar Eltony and Alba Rosas Garcia combined for a 6-2 win at second doubles.  Rosas Garcia notched a three-set victory at the fifth spot over Tiffany Dun, 3-6, 6-2, (10-5).

Highlanders Amanda Helminsky and Advaita Saravanan recorded a 6-0 win at third singles.  Helminsky, competing at sixth singles, picked up a straight set victory, 6-4, 7-5, against Maria Pandya.

Newcomer Advaita Saravanan won by identical scores, 6-4, 6-4 at second singles, topping Olga Ostrovetsky.

NJIT will conclude a five-match homestand, hosting Siena on February 24 at 12Noon at The Naimoli Family Athletic and Recreational Facility.
