NEWARK, NJ—The NJIT men's tennis team won its fourth straight match of the season, edging visiting Bryant, 4-3, Saturday afternoon at The Naimoli Family Athletic and Recreational Facility.
NJIT (4-0) picked up the doubles point with wins at the second and third spot while adding wins at third, fourth and sixth singles. Bryant, four-time defending Northeast Conference champions, drops to 5-9 on the season.
"We put a big focus this week in practice on our doubles and it paid off," head coach
Ira Miller added after the exciting win over Bryant. "The doubles point couldn't have been any closer but Zac (Castagna) and Aleksa (Petrovic) pulled out a tight tiebreaker. Despite missing our number one player, Tomi (Antoljak), the boys stepped up. Aleksa and Abdallah (Fouad) won decidedly and senior co-captain Rich (Rangga) closed out like true veteran."
Highlander pair
Richard Rangga and
Lukas Zvikas teamed for a 6-4 victory at second doubles while
Aleksa Petrovic and
Zac Castagna combined for a 7-6 (5) victory at the third spot.
Petrovic, a double-winner on the day, won in straight sets at fourth singles, 6-0, 6-3 over Arthur Jakubowksi.
Newcomer
Abdullah Fouad recorded a 7-6 (6), 6-0 decision against Wilson Dong at the third spot for NJIT.
Rangga closed out the match by identical scores, 6-1, 6-1, over Trent Massam.
NJIT, which has played it last four matches at home, will visit Army on February 24 at 12pm and Brown on February 25 at 8am.
