NJIT Highlights and Interviews
NEWARK, NJ—The NJIT men's swimming and diving program celebrated a 229-57 win over visiting Monmouth as the Highlanders' hosted its first-ever collegiate meet in the Wellness and Events Center (WEC) Natatorium on Senior Day Saturday morning.
In pregame ceremonies, NJIT honored its five graduating seniors --
Edward Mann,
Jack Matusiak,
Scott Quirie,
Matheus Monteiro Montarroyos and
Maxim Tillmann.
NJIT, which recorded 16 first-place finishes, improves to 6-8 on the season.
In the 400 medley relay, which consisted of Quirie,
Nicholas Lyons,
Mattheau Bonner and Matusiak, the Highlanders placed first with a time of 3:33.76.
Freshman
JT Morehead turned in a strong performance in the 1000 freestyle, picking up a first-place finish with a time of 10:22.53. Classmate
Jeremiah Sanchez placed fourth at 11:06.27.
NJIT went 1-2-3 in the 200 freestyle led by Montarroyos with a time of 1:45.78 followed by Bonner (1:48.76) and
Jake Haefner (1:49.97).
Quirie earned a first-place in the 100 backstroke at 53.10 while
Kevin Roberton clocked in a 56.35.
Lyons and
Alex Danielson went 1-2 in the 100 breaststroke crossing the finish line at 59.81 and 1:00.06 respectively for the Highlanders.
In the 200 butterfly, NJIT finished 1-2-3 led by
Edward Parks, placing first with a time of 1:56.87 followed by Bonner (2:01.15) and
JT Morehead (2:06.90).
Montarroyos took first in the 50 freestyle with a time of 21.77 while
Tyler Pollock took second (22.10), Matusiak in third (22.23) and Lyons in fourth (22.32).
In the men's 1 meter diving, the first diving event hosted in the new WEC Natatorium, Becker Cole placed first with a score of 195.60 while sophomore
Avery Bechtel combined for 159.70 score.
Montarroyos led the Highlanders once again in the 100 freestyle with a time of 48.18 followed by Parks (49.17), Matusiak (49.63) and Pollock (49.69).
NJIT's top swimmer Quirie earned first-place in the 200 backstroke with a time of 1:57.12 while Roberton placed third (2:08.00) and Mann (2:10.01) in fourth.
In the 200 breaststroke, Lyons paced the Highlanders with a first-place finish with a time of 2:12.97 followed by Danielson (2:15.08).
Morehead and Maxim Tillman went 1-2 in the 500 yard freestyle at 4:59.96 and 5:07.04 respectivley for the Highlanders.
In the 100 butterfly, Parks earned first with a time of 52.23 while Bonner, who took second in the event, finished with a time of 52.85.
Bechtel placed first in the 3 meter diving, combining for a 221.00 final score, setting a new NJIT record followed by teammate Becker, who combined for a score of 176.85.
Quirie picked up another first place finish in the 200 IM with a time of 1:57.60.
The 200 freestyle relay placed first, clocking in at 1:28.81, which consisted of Pollock, Haefner, Matusiak and Montarroyos.
NJIT diving will return to action on February 2 at the NYU Invitational.
The Highlanders will return to action on February 14 at the CCSA Championships hosted by Georgia in Athens, Georgia.
