Highlanders Drop Another OT Heartbreaker to UMass Lowell

LOWELL, MA – NJIT women's soccer dropped another heartbreaker, a 2-1 loss to UMass Lowell as time expired in the second overtime on Sunday afternoon.

The River Hawks (1-2) won after Andrea Morrow shot over the NJIT defender and goal keeper as time expired.

The Highlanders (0-3) had the edge in shots, 16-14 and received one goal from Carly Berdan in the second half. Berdan led the team in shots with three, and NJIT tallied shots from nine other players.

UMass Lowell was quick to strike scoring in the first four minutes of the game, when Rachel Morrier scored from inside the box into the upper right hand corner.

Going into halftime the River Hawks had the 1-0 lead until Berdan scored her first goal of the season with 13:45 remaining. Berdan received the ball up the field and dribbled the ball past her defender, chipping the ball over the keeper to tie the game at 1-1.

After the first full golden goal overtime, the score was still tied, until UMass Lowell capitalized in the very last second of the second OT.

Karen David finished with three saves for the Highlanders, while Julia Schneider accumulated four saves in the River Hawks first win of 2017.

NJIT hosts Marist on August 30 at 4pm for their first home contest of 2017. The first 50 fans will receive a 2017 NJIT women's soccer schedule poster.
