NEWARK, NJ— NJIT Athletics recognized the contributions and accomplishments of over 325 student-athletes on its 19 varsity teams for the 2016-17 season at the athletic awards banquet on Wednesday, May 3, on campus at the Campus Center Ballroom.
The athletic sports banquet and awards ceremony was a fun-filled night designed to honor the NJIT Highlander teams for all of their hard work on and off the field during the 2016-17 athletic year.
Most Outstanding Player by sport awards along with Athletic Training, Best Dressed and Best Game Face Awards, Community Service, Highlander Academic and Senior Awards were given out over the course of the evening. There was also sport videos and a slideshow featuring the 2016-17 NJIT Highlander student-athletes in action.
The evening was capped with the announcements of the 2016-17 Male and Female Athletes of the Year, as well as the Male and Female Newcomers of the Year.

Arianna Gerber, was named Female Athlete of the Year.

Danielle Tunstall was honored as Female Newcomer of the Year.

Tunstall was named to the ASUN All-Freshmen Team, combining for four double-doubles, two coming in her first two collegiate games.
In her college debut, she recorded 12 points and 14 rebounds against Wagner and followed up with a 19-point, 13 rebound performance three days later.
In the last five games of the season, she recorded double-digit scoring in four-out-of-five games and combined for three blocks in three of NJIT's five games while averaging 9.8ppg and 8.0rpg.
Her 6.3rpg ranked first on the team and eighth in the ASUN.

Male Newcomer of the Year
Victor Pujades, Men's Soccer
Pujades was named to the ASUN All-Freshmen team, posting a 1.11 goals against average with 51 saves and a .729 save percentage.
His 1.11 goals against average ranked second in the ASUN and his 51 saves ranked third.
He broke the NJIT D1 single-season record and career record for shutouts with (7), including consecutive shutouts with (4).
He became the first NJIT men's soccer player to receive ASUN Defensive Player of the Week honors.

Female Athlete of the Year
Arianna Gerber, Women's Soccer
Gerber was named to the ASUN second team, pacing the Highlanders with six assists, a new NJIT D1 single-season mark -- three shy the program mark of (9).
Her six career assists rank third all-time in the D1 era with two seasons of eligibility remaining.
She ranks second on the team with eight points and her 16 career points are tied for third all-time in the NJIT D1 era.

This record setting male athlete added to his 2017 honors, earning second-team All-American honors.
A two-time EIVA Player of the Year (co-Player in 2016) and first-team honoree, ranks second in the nation in kills per set (4.43) and points per set (5.15) while sitting in the top 5 in attacks per set (9.08).
The 6-foot-4 outside hitter led the EIVA in kills per set, overall kills and service aces while ranking third in hitting percentage.
He was selected EIVA Player of the Week twice this season and recorded double-figure kills in 23 out of 26 matches, including seven 20+ kill performances.
He surpassed the 1,000 kills mark on February 11 against Saint Francis U in the Highlanders 3-2 victory and concludes his four-year career at NJIT with 1,450 kills.
