NJIT Scores Seven in Ninth-Inning Rally; Dolphins Win 13-11 In Extra Innings

NEWARK, NJ—NJIT rallied in the ninth inning, scoring seven runs to tie the game at 11-11, but visiting Jacksonville won in extra innings, 13-11, in the first of a three-game ASUN Conference series at Riverfront Stadium Friday evening.

NJIT (3-23, 0-4 ASUN), which played its first 25 games on the road, opened the home portion of its schedule Friday, scoring a pair of runs in the first, one in the fourth and sixth, knotting the game at 4-4, through six innings.

Jacksonville (16-15, 3-1 ASUN) broke open the game with a six-run seventh inning and added a single run in the top of the ninth, but the Highlanders rallied to score seven runs in the bottom of the ninth, 11-11, extending the game into extra innings.

The Dolphins scored a pair of runs in the 10th inning on a two-out double to left center by SS Dakota Juylia to put the Dolphins ahead, 13-11.

Each team used five pitchers, with the Dolphins starting pitcher junior Michael Baumann recording a no-decision.  The 2015 ASUN Pitcher and Freshmen of the Year, pitched the first six, letting up seven hits, four runs and one walk while striking out two Highlanders.

Junior Spencer Stockton (4-2) entered the game in the ninth inning and recorded the final out and pitched a 1-2-3 tenth inning, picking up his fourth win of the season for the Dolphins.

NJIT's Brett Lubreski was the first of five pitchers for the Highlanders Friday, pitching 4.0 innings, giving up five hits, three runs and two walks.  Left-hander Justin Chin closed out the seventh and pitched a strong eighth and ninth inning for the Highlanders, letting up two hits and one run while fanning one batter.  NJIT reliever Bryan Haberstroh (0-1) was stuck with the loss, pitching the tenth, allowing two hits and two runs.

Jacksonville's 2B Scott Dubrule went 1-for-5 with three RBI's while 1B Angel Camacho, finished 1-for-3 with three RBI's of his own.  Dolphin C Reagan Wright went 4-for-5 with one RBI and three runs followed by 3B Alex Sfifert, who went 3-for-4 with three runs.

NJIT's pinch hitter Brady Hall went 1-for-2 with three RBI and one run scored, including a three-run home run, his first of the season in the ninth-inning.

Sophomore SS Justin Etts finished 2-for-5 with two RBI and one run while freshmen RF Matthew Cocciadiferro finished 2-for-5 with two RBI and two runs.  Cocciadiferro hit a two-run homer in the top of the first, recording his second home run of the season.

Jacksonville got on the board in the top of the first on a sacrifice fly to left field by Camacho, who drove in leadoff batter RF Nathan Koslowski.  Koslowski hit a blooper over the Highlanders second baseman, stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch before scoring on Camacho's sacrifice fly.

NJIT responded in the bottom of the first on a two-run blast to right field by Cocciadiferro, putting the Highlanders ahead, 2-1.

Jacksonville added a pair of runs in the top of the fourth, on a two-out single to left field by Dubrule, scoring Wright and Seifert, pulling ahead, 3-2.  Wright led off the inning with a single through the left side and Seifert followed with a bunt single down the left field line.

The Highlanders tied the game, 3-3, in the bottom of the fourth on a sacrifice fly by C Cody Kramer, driving in Haberstroh, who reached first on a throwing error by Jacksonville's third baseman and advanced to second on the throw.

Jacksonville scored a single run in the top of the fifth to regain the lead, 4-3, on two hits and one error by the Highlanders.

With two outs in the bottom of the sixth, the Highlanders knotted the game at 4-4, on a double to right field by 2B Tom Brady, scoring Haberstroh, who reached first on a fielder's choice.

The Dolphins broke open the game in the top of the seventh with six runs on two hits, pushing the visitors ahead to 10-4.

The momentum shifted in NJIT's favor as the Highlanders drew three walks, a wild pitch, and an error that helped NJIT score seven runs in the bottom of the ninth. The Highlanders tied the game 11-11 on the error as Jacksonville's Stockton forced a pop out to end the Highlanders seven-run ninth-inning.

With two outs in the 10th, Jacksonville's Wright, singled up the middle off the pitcher's foot. Seifert was walked, and Julylia placed a deep shot just a few inches off the centerfielder's glove to score both runs, pulling ahead, 13-11.

The Highlanders went down 1-2-3 in the tenth, as NJIT's Rex MacMillon ended the game on a lineout to second base.

The two teams will return to action on Saturday at Riverfront Stadium.  First pitch is set for 1pm.
