Women’s Tennis Begins 2017 ASUN Conference Tournament on Friday

FORT MYERS, FL—NJIT, the number three seed in the ASUN Tournament, will open postseason play against sixth-seeded Kennesaw State at the 2017 ASUN Conference Women's Tennis Championships, hosted by Florida Gulf Coast on Friday, April 21, at 12 pm held at the FGCU Tennis Complex.

The action begins with No. 3 NJIT (3-3 ASUN, 7-12 overall) vs. No. 6 Kennesaw State (1-5 ASUN, 5-14 overall) and No. 4 Stetson (3-3 ASUN, 6-13 overall) vs. No. 5 Lipscomb (2-4 ASUN, 6-16 overall).  Both matches will begin at 12 pm.

"I'm very proud of the women's performance this year," head coach Ira Miller commented.  "We've come a long way these past few years and we're looking forward to further making our mark in the ASUN Conference Championship."

Host Florida Gulf Coast (6-0 ASUN, 14-4 overall), the No. 1 seed will face the winner of Stetson/Lipscomb on Saturday, April 22 while No. 2 North Florida (5-1 ASUN, 13-8 overall) will face the winner of NJIT/Kennesaw State.  Both matches will begin at 12 pm.

The ASUN Women's Tennis Championship finals will be played on Sunday, April 23 at 10 am.  The match will be streamed live on ESPN3.

In the first meeting between NJIT and Kennesaw State, NJIT went on to win, 5-2, behind four singles victories and a sweep in doubles action.

The Highlanders are led by senior Nathalie Habegger and junior Natacha Minc, who have combined for 15 wins each. 

Habegger has won the last three out of four singles matches, including a 5-1 mark in ASUN action.  In doubles action with teammate Alba Rosas Garcia, the pair combined for a 12-8 overall mark, notching a 7-4 record at the second spot.

Minc, a transfer from The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley, became the Highlanders first-ever tennis athlete to earn ASUN Conference Women's Tennis Player of the Week (3/8/17).

The Highlander newcomer, who moved up the lineup to third singles, midway through the season, won a stretch of five matches early in the season (Oct. 29-Jan. 21) and then again later, this time four straight (Feb. 11- Mar. 5).

Rosas Garcia notched a 12-11 overall mark and 4-2 in ASUN action, going 7-5 at the fifth spot in singles action.
