Men’s Lacrosse Breaks Seven Program Records in 17-3 Win Over Hampton

HAMPTON, VA
– NJIT men's lacrosse posted their first win in 2017 and second win in program history with their 17-3 victory over Hampton on Saturday afternoon.

The Highlanders (1-12) broke seven program records, including goals in a game (17), assists in a game (14), points in a game (31) and face-offs won (19) while tying their record for ground balls in a game with 39.

Aaron Forster also broke the records for points in a game with nine on his four goals and five assists, and the record for assists in a game.

Also putting up big number for NJIT was Ryan Callaghan, who seven points in a game ranks second behind Forster (3g, 4a), in points in a game.

Callaghan and Forster combined on four of the Highlanders 17 goals and combined for 16 of NJIT's 31 points.

Cole Robillard earned a career-high three points on a goal and two assists, with Ryan Darrow and Jacob Sieber adding two points each, Darrow with a goal and an assist and Sieber posting two goals. Johnny Madaras IV posted a career-high two points in a game on his firsts career goal and an assist.

Five other Highlanders notched goals in the win Ryan Kaden, Adam Gonzalez, Matt Brown, Grant Toller, and Anthony Rodriguez, with Gonzalez, Toller, and Rodriguez, also grabbing their first career goals. Mathew Sanchez added an assist for NJIT.

On the face-off circle the Highlanders were 19-for-23 with Tyler Stevenson going 17-for-20 and Gonzalez grabbing the other two wins going 2-for-3. Sophomore Steveson's 17 wins is also a new program record for face-off wins in a game.

Stevenson also posted a game-high 11 ground balls, two short from the NJIT record.

More firsts for the Highlanders, defenseman Eric Huyler posted a career-high four ground balls and one caused turnover.

Two Pirates (1-7) posted points for Hampton, with Jacob Woodard scoring two goals and tallying an assist and Jonathan Napier recording the other goal.

The Highlanders picked up a 5-0 lead in the first, and were winning 7-1 at halftime.

NJIT continued their scoring in the second half, outscoring their opponents 10-2.

The Highlanders outscored their opponent 54-21, which is one shy from the program record 55 that they posted against Manhattan in 2016.

Each team split time in goal with two goalies each. Nick Marzullo posted eight saves in his second career win, with Cameron Cronk coming in the last 21 minutes posting five saves.

Joshua Tarver got the start for the Pirates and made six saves in 15 minutes, and Kevin Mondy Jr came in the second quarter and posted 12 saves in the last three quarters.

NJIT travels to Manhattan for their last away game of 2017 on April 22 for a 7pm game against the Jaspers.
