MADISON, NJ – Sophomore
Aaron Forster broke the NJIT men's lacrosse single game goal record, scoring five goals against #5 Rutgers in the Highlanders 10-6 loss on Friday night at Drew University's Ranger Stadium.
Forster, who broke the NJIT career scoring and career assist records during their game against Army on Monday, scored five of the Highlanders six goals against the Scarlet Knights.
The Highlanders (0-8) also received a goal from
Ryan Darrow while
Ryan Kaden added two assists and
Matt Brown added another.
Rutgers, who remains undefeated at 8-0, got hat-tricks from Kieran Mullins and Casey Rose.
NJIT kept the game close with the Scarlet Knights posting only nine less shots, causing the same amount of turnovers with seven and stopping Rutgers in extra man opportunities three times, 0-3.
In a close first quarter, Rutgers was the first to score in the ninth minute, before Forster tied it with his first goal of the game.
Mullins put the Scarlet Knights back in the lead, but Forster tied it again at 2-2 heading into the second quarter.
Rutgers scored the first two goals of the second before Forster added another two goals for the Highlanders, tying the game again at 4-4 with over six minutes left before halftime.
The Scarlet Knights notched one more goal to take the 5-4 leading heading into intermission.
Rutgers Casey Rose and Connor Murphy were the only goal scorers of the third period, extending their lead 7-4.
The fourth was another five goal quarter, with Forster posting his NJIT record goal at 12:18, and bringing the Highlanders again within two.
The Scarlet Knights outscored NJIT 3-1 in the remainder of the period for the final 10-6 score.
Both goal keepers performed phenomenally in goal, each making point blank saves, and keeping the game close for each team.
NJIT's
Cameron Cronk started in his third consecutive game making 11 saves in the loss while also grabbing three ground balls and a team-high two caused turnovers.
Mac Edelmann made eight saves for Rutgers in his eighth win of the season.
Heading back on the road the Highlanders travel to Fairfield, CT on Tuesday to play Fairfield for an afternoon game at 3pm.
