Late Home Run Lifts High Point to 6-5 Win Over NJIT

Uttendorfer Collects Four Hits in Series Finale

HIGH POINT, N.C.Austen Zente's go-ahead two-run shot in the bottom of the eighth proved to be the difference as High Point (2-1) topped NJIT (1-2), 6-5 in the series finale on Sunday afternoon at Williard Stadium.

The Panthers trailed 5-1 at one point before scoring five unanswered runs.

Zente's home run came off of sophomore LHP Chris Gibbons (0-1) who was dealt the loss for NJIT after allowing two runs on one hit in 0.1 innings.

Freshman RHP Joe Johnson (1-0) struck out a pair over two scoreless innings of relief to earn the win for High Point and RHP Carson Jackson retired the side in order in the ninth to notch his first save.

Making his first collegiate start for the Highlanders, RHP Tyler Stafflinger (n/d) gave up three runs on three hits to go along with three strikeouts in 5.1 innings.

NJIT struck first with an early run to take a 1-0 lead in the top of the first as OF Jesse Uttendorfer got things started with a single, took second on a passed ball, went to third on an Evan Pietronico single and scored on a successfully executed double steal.

In fact, the Highlanders scored in each of the first three innings of the contest.

Junior 3B Tommy Derer reached on an error with two away in the second and scored on the next play as Uttendorfer ripped a double down the left field line and a throwing error from Panthers LF Tim Mansfield allowed Derers to scamper home with NJIT's second run of the afternoon.

Pietronico continued his hot start to the season with a solo shot to lead off the top of the third and sophomore INF Tom Brady singled and later scored on a wild pitch to give the Highlanders a 4-0 advantage.

In the three-game series, Pietronico was 5-11 (.455) with a home run, two RBIs, a pair of runs scored and a stolen base.

Freshman RHP Drew Daczkowski (n/d) got the start on the bump for High Point and surrendered four runs (two earned) on six hits while walking three and fanning one in 2.1 innings.

The Panthers got on the board in the fifth with a solo shot from Jackson-one of his two on the day-to cut the lead to 4-1.

Back-to-back one-out singles from Uttendorfer and OF Matthew Cocciadiferro set the tone for NJIT in the sixth and Johnny Malatesta drew a bases-loaded walk later in the frame to make it a 5-1 game in favor of the visitors.

High Point would quickly strike back in the home half of the inning as Zente was hit by a pitch and Jordan Sergent followed with a two-run homer to bring the hosts within 5-3.

Jackson's second round-tripper of the day came in the bottom of the seventh and trimmed the Highlander lead to 5-4.

NJIT outhit High Point 10-6 in the game, led by four hits from Uttendorfer and two apiece from Cocciadiferro and Pietronico. Jackson and Zente each notched multi-hit games to pace High Point.

Uttendorfer doubled, stole a base and scored a pair of runs as part of his 4-5 effort.

The Highlanders will be back in action at the Perfect Game Tournament in Emerson, Ga., next weekend. On Friday, Feb. 25, head coach Brian Guiliana's squad will face IPFW at 3 p.m. and Canisius at 6 p.m. at the LakePoint Sports Complex before wrapping up the tournament with an 11 a.m. tilt vs. Chicago State on Saturday, Feb. 26.
