NJIT (8-7-3)
Six members of the NJIT men's soccer team earned 2017 ASUN All-Conference honors headed by ASUN Player of the Year
Mamadou Guirassy.
Guirassy, from Paris, France, ranks first in the nation in total goals (16) and second in game-winning goals (5) and total points (34) and third in goals per game (0.94).
The senior forward leads the ASUN in total goals (16), total points (33), game-winning goals (5), goals per game (0.94), points per game (2.00) and total shots (81).
His 16 goals and 34 points are an NJIT Division I record single season record.
Senior midfielder Danny Cordeiro has had a breakout season as well and was rewarded with second-team All-Conference honors. He doubled his scoring output this season scoring four goals and has added three assists for 11 points. His previous single-season high for points was eight in 2016.
NJIT featured three players on the 2017 ASUN All-Freshmen Team, which tied for the most selections by any school. Pablo Jimenez has been one of the standout midfielders in the league as the freshman leads all ASUN players with six assists. Thomas Radon and Hugo Espuela joined him on the All-Freshmen Team.
The 2017 season marks the best start in program history for NJIT, since competing at the Division I level (first season 2004) with a 5-1-1 record.
NJIT debuted in the first United Soccer Coaches Regional Poll at No. 10 in the Southeast (August 29); climbed six spots to fourth in the latest Southeast Region poll to fourth (Sept. 5) and moved up one spot to third (Sept. 12; Sept. 19) and remained in the top 10 for the next five weeks.
For the first time since competing at the Division I level (first season 2004), the Highlanders received votes in the National Top-25 poll, with five votes (Sept. 12 poll).
With a win over Lipscomb Friday, NJIT will set the second-highest win-output mark since competing at the Division I level.
LAST TIME OUT VS. LIPSCOMB
The Highlanders own a 1-1 all-time record with Lipscomb as both teams have won on the road.
Guirassy converted a penalty kick in the seventh minute for the lone goal of the game in NJIT's 1-0 victory at Lipscomb on September 30.
LIPSCOMB (9-7-1)
Lipscomb features one of the most experienced teams in this year's ASUN Championship field. The Bisons have advanced to the ASUN Championship Semifinal round every season since 2012 and look for the breakthrough this year. The Bisons own a 6-2 all-time record in first round matches.
Logan Paynter is the team's top goal scorer as he finished the regular season with eight goals, second in the ASUN. The junior striker has been a consistent threat since the start of his Bisons career, scoring six or more goals in each of his three years. He was voted to the First Team All-Conference for the third-straight year.
Midfielder Ivan Alvarado had another great regular season with four goals and three assists to finish with 11 points. He was voted to the First Team All-Conference for the fourth consecutive year, becoming just the 18th player in ASUN history to accomplish that feat.
The Bisons have only been the No. 6 seed in one previous ASUN Championship, back in 2009 where they fell in the first round. No. 6-seeded teams have only won three matches in ASUN Championship history, with the last victory coming in 2014 by former member Northern Kentucky. Only one team seeded at No. 6 has ever advanced to the ASUN Championship Final, which occurred in 2011.
Lipscomb keeper Christopher Zappia has started and played every minute of the season in goal. His 70 total saves ranks second in the ASUN this season, while his nine wins are the most by any ASUN goalie entering the postseason this year.
