LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ—Senior forward Caroline Healy's first goal of the season, which came in the 108
th minute, was the difference for Rider, which defeated visiting NJIT, 1-0, in double overtime in non-conference women's soccer action at Ben Cohen Field.
The game, originally slated for 4pm, moved to 7pm due to excessive heat.
The win for Rider was their second straight and third overtime game of the season, after coming off a 1-1 double overtime draw at Bucknell on September 4.  Rider improves to 3-2-1 overall.
NJIT, which entered the game ranked 12
th in the nation in scoring and fourth in shots on goal, dropped its first game of 2016, after going 4-0-2 through the first six games, the best start in program history. 
Rider's goal at 107:59 came on a direct kick from 22 yards out to give Rider the 1-0 double overtime win.
The total shots Thursday night favored the Broncs, 14-12, including 4-0 in overtime.  Shots on goal were 7-6 for the home team. 
Winning goalkeeper senior Bethany-May Howard had six saves in the shutout for Rider, while NJIT's senior 
Karen David made six saves of her own.
The Highlanders had two scoring opportunities just before the end of regulation, both coming from fifth-year senior 
Kaelyn Gamel.  Gamel, who missed the 2015 season due to injury after scoring five times in the previous two seasons, had a chance in the 87
th and 88
th minute, but both shots went wide.
In addition to Gamel, 
Lizzy Wolfe, 
Brooke McGee and 
Arianna Gerber each were credited with two shots apiece.  McGee and Gerber's two shots were on goal.
NJIT will return to action on Sunday, September 11 at 11am when the Highlanders travel to Riverdale, NY and face Manhattan.  Last season, the Jaspers defeated NJIT, 4-0, in Newark.
