Post Game Interview
UNION, NJ—NJIT and Lafayette played to a 1-1 double overtime tie in women's soccer non-conference action Sunday afternoon at Alumni Stadium on the campus of Kean University.
NJIT's best start in program history, kept its unbeaten streak alive with a 1-1 double overtime draw against Lafayette, improving to 4-0-2 on the season. The visiting Leopards, off to a program-best start, stand at 3-0-2 on the season.
The 1-1 draw against Lafayette, is the second draw in 2016 for the Highlanders. NJIT and Quinnipiac played to a 2-2 double overtime tie on August 26.
The Highlanders wasted no time, as sophomore
Arianna Gerber got things going, taking the first shot of the game thirty seconds in, carrying the ball to the middle of the box and striking with her left foot to the right corner of the goal, but Lafayette keeper Danielle Sedillo made a diving save.
NJIT freshman
Monica Wood took a free kick from 25 yards on the right side in the 19
th minute, serving the ball into the box, finding
Lizzy Wolfe, who headed the ball. Lafayette's Sedillo made a nice save, recording her second save of the game.
In the 20
th minute,
Brooke McGee shot a low point blank shot but Sedillo made the save.
Lafayette had an early scoring opportunity in the first minute to open the second half on a close shot by Melissa Lynskey
The Leopards got on the board in the 51st minute as Kaelin King carried the ball down the right side and crossed the ball to Lynskey, who settled the ball in the box and shot over NJIT's keeper, hitting the crossbar and bouncing into the goal. The goal for Lynskey was her sixth of the season.
Freshman
Fiorella Doglio blasted a shot from 25 yards on the left side, hitting the crossbar and bouncing out of bounds in the 68th minute.
In the 7
4th minute, a handball by a Lafayette defender inside the box, resulted in a penalty kick for the Highlanders. Sophomore
Melanie Zrno tucked her third goal of the season into the upper right corner of the net for a 1-1 tie.
The Highlanders led the way in shots, 21-12, and NJIT goalkeeper
Karen David finished with three saves compared to her counterpart, Sedillo, with seven saves.
NJIT, which has played five of its first six games at home will play the next seven on the road. The Highlanders will visit Rider on September 8 at 4pm.
Last season, Rider defeated NJIT, 1-0, in Newark, NJ, on a goal scored in the 71
st minute by Shannon Kelly.
