DELAND, FL—Stetson came back with three unanswered goals in the second half, including a pair of goals in a span of three minutes to pull out a 3-2 win over, visiting NJIT in ASUN Conference women's soccer Friday night at Stetson Athletic Training Facility.
NJIT, now 1-1 in the ASUN and 5-5-2 overall, built a 1-0 lead in the 44
th minute. Stetson tied the score in the 63
rd minute and took a 2-1 lead two minutes later.
The visitors tied the match, 2-2, in the 74
th minute but the Hatters regained the lead in the 84
th and held on to a 3-2 win. Stetson recorded its first win in the ASUN and improves to 4-4-2 on the season.
NJIT sophomore
Melanie Zrno scored the first goal of the match, assisted by
Arianna Gerber. Zrno's goal came off a miscue by the Hatter defense in the 44
th minute inside the box. It was the fourth goal of the season for Zrno.
The six assists by Gerber in a single season is a new NJIT DI record, just three short the program-record nine (held by
Cathy Wasko; 2001). Gerber's six career assists are two shy the NJIT DI career record (held by
Madeline Griep (2012-15) and
Meryl Hershfield (2009-12)).
Stetson tied the match in the 63
rd minute on a goal by Lindsay Parent. The play started with a shot by Hatters Sarah Collins, which was blocked by the NJIT defense. Parent gathered the rebound off an NJIT defender and found the back of the net for her second goal of the season. Collins was credited with the assist.
Two minute later, Collins picked up her second assist of the match, when she fed a pass to Eduarda Pavao, who was open on the backside and finished with her first goal of the season.
Stetson's 2-1 advantage lasted 10 minutes, before NJIT's
Carly Berdan scored her first goal of the season at 73:14, tying the match at 2-2, assisted by freshman
Lizzy Wolfe.
The winning goal was scored by Stetson's Briana Camargo on a through ball from 25 yards, into the center of the goal. Collins collected her third assist of the match while Abbie Camargo was also credited with the assist.
NJIT senior goalkeeper
Karen David recorded a season-high 12 saves, including a penalty kick save in the 25th minute while the victorious Hatters keeper, Emily Plotz stopped three NJIT shots.
Stetson outshot visiting NJIT, 25-9 in overall shots and 15-5 in shots on goal.
NJIT will return to action on Sunday when the Highlanders travel to Fort Myers, Florida and take on FGCU. The Eagles (7-4 overall, 1-0 in ASUN) are coming off a 4-0 shutout victory over USC Upstate behind a pair of goals by Emilie Olsen and Tabby Tindell.
