FORT MYERS, FL – NJIT women's soccer fell 1-0 in the last two minutes of regulation time to ASUN Conference opponent FGCU on Sunday afternoon at the FGCU Soccer Complex.
The Highlanders (5-6-2, 1-2-0 ASUN) defense and goal keeper
Amelia Sapirman kept the Eagles (8-4-0, 2-0-0 ASUN) to only one goal after posting 34 shots in the game. NJIT posted three shots in the game.
Sapirman posted a career high nine saves in the loss after her second start of the season.
FGCU kept the pressure on most of the first half outshooting NJIT 11-1.
In the last minute of the first half the Highlanders had their best looks on goal.
Emily Heckman put up a free kick into the Eagles box that FGCU was able to clear.
Neema Liverpool gave NJIT their only shot of the half, when she took on a defender and beat her on her right side, but her shot was saved by FGCU keeper Melissa Weck.
Starting off the second half
Arianna Gerber received a pass forward and took on five Eagle defenders to get off another shot for the Highlanders.
Gerber broke away from the defense once more in the 58
th minute and her shot came up just wide of the goal.
FGCU was awarded a penalty kick in the 74
th minute. Paulina Speckmaier was elected to take the kick for the Eagle's and was stopped by Sapirman, who made a diving save to hold the score 0-0.
With just under two minutes to go, Tabby Tindell scored on her sixth shot attempt for her tenth goal of the season off a corner at the back post. Tindell now holds the all-time ASUN record in goals with 62.
The Highlanders return home after playing seven games on the road when they host North Florida on October 8 at 3pm at Kean University East Campus Facility.
