NEWARK, NJ--In front of a large crowd at the 2016 home opener, the NJIT Club Ice Hockey team got off to a good start, defeating Stevens 4-2, at the Prudential Center.
Stevens, the reigning champions of the MCHC were no match for the speed and tenacity of NJIT.
David Ferrero opened the scoring on a power play for the Highlanders in the first period.
In the 2nd period,
Michael Barrera fed
Phil Lelikov with a beautiful pass for a 2-0 lead and
Thomas Mudry added a breakaway goal just 16 seconds later picking the top right corner.
Stevens got on the board late in the second to make it, interesting and the teams traded power play goals in the 3rd for the final score.
NJIT goalie
Thomas Pyrka was solid in net to secure the first win of the season.

Assists - Tubilleja, Mudry, Barrera, Wong, Murphy
NJIT returns to action on Saturday at 8:30pm when the Highlanders host the Fordham Rams at the Prudential Center.
