MADISON, NJ – In their last home game of the season, and senior day for
Sheldon Piggot, the Highlanders fell to Marist 14-10 in men's lacrosse at Drew University on Saturday.
Piggot is the first senior in the history of NJIT varsity lacrosse, which played its first season in 2015.
NJIT (1-13) was led by freshman
Aaron Forster (3g, 2a) and junior
Ryan Callaghan (2g, 2a), who both had career-best point games, Forster with five and Callaghan with four. Freshman
Patrick Benton added two assists and the Highlanders tallied goals from
Ryan Bradway,
Matt Brown,
Ryan Darrow,
Jesse Rice and
Jack Mazurek.
Mazurek was 11-21 on the faceoff circle, which was one win away from his season high.
The Red Foxes (7-6) were led by JD Recor, who recorded three goals and three assists, Gannon Morrison who tallied one goal and four assists and Joseph Radin who notched four goals.
Marist came out hot in the first quarter with five goals before Bradway, a sophomore, scored in the fifth minute for NJIT from 15 yards out off a pass from Benton. Forster scored his first goal of the game minutes later off a quick pass from Callaghan. Marist added another goal before the period was over to take the 6-2 lead.
The Highlanders outscored the Red Foxes in the second quarter, 3-1, cutting NJIT's deficit at halftime to 7-5. The scoring didn't get started until the fifth minute when
Brett Goldstein stole the ball at midfield, for a quick transition goal from Callaghan. Sophomore Rice fired a rocket shot from 20 yards out, and Mazurek scored his first goal of this career for the Highlanders third goal of the quarter.
The Red Foxes scored another six goals in the third quarter , with three of the goals coming from Radin and two from from Thomas Rago. Darrow, another NJIT rookie, had the only Highlander goal of the third and Marist took a 13-6 edge into the fourth and final quarter.
The Highlanders would score four goals in the fourth, but they weren't enough to overcome Marist's dominance from the third quarter and the Red Foxes prevailed, 14-10.
Nick Marzullo made 11 saves for NJIT in the loss, while the win went to Brian Corrigan who tallied three saves. Also getting time in goal for Marist were David Meyer and Dylan Woods.
The Highlanders will travel to Massachusetts for their last game of the season at UMass Lowell at 1pm on April 23.
