LOWELL, MA – Despite
Nick Marzullo's career-high 17 saves, NJIT men's lacrosse dropped a 7-6 overtime heartbreaker to UMass Lowell on Saturday.
Marzullo broke his own program record of 16 saves, which he posted three times this season and twice in 2015.
The Highlanders (1-14) were led by
Ryan Callaghan, who tallied two goals and
Ryan Bradway, who dished two assists.
Aaron Forster and
Jesse Rice each recorded a goal and an assist apiece. Also adding goals for NJIT were
Matt Brown and
Jacob Sieber.
The River Hawks (4-12) had eight different players notching points; Matthew Balter led with two goals and Jon Phillips tallied one goal and two assists.
Freshman Forster was first to put the Highlanders on the board with an unassisted goal at 14:16. UMass Lowell answered back at 11:42, and just over a minute later Rice took a shot from 15 yards out off a pass from Forster to put NJIT ahead again.
The River Hawks tied it up again with another goal by Balter. But with four seconds remaining in the period, NJIT's Brown picked up the loose ball from
Ryan Darrow's shot and buried it into the back of the net, giving the Highlanders the 3-2 lead going into the second period.
Freshman Sieber scored the first goal of his career off a pass from Rice 11 seconds into the second. The Highlanders scored two more goals in the second period, both coming from a Bradway to Callaghan connection and led 6-4 at the half.
Marzullo tallied nine saves in the first half, and NJIT was 7-12 from the faceoff circle.
The third quarter was scoreless for both teams.
The River Hawks broke the scoring drought with 5:58 remaining in the fourth quarter to bring UMass Lowell within one. Then Cory Highfield scored a man-up goal with under two minutes to go to tie the game at 6.
River Hawk leading scorer Tyrrell scored the game-winner 1:51 into the first overtime to give the River Hawks the win.
The Highlanders end their 2016 sophomore season with one win, the first program history (10-7 at Dartmouth on March 22).
Forster led the team in points (28) and assists (13), while sophomore
Joe Lomeli ranked first in goals (17).
Forster broke the NJIT men's lacrosse program record for points in a game against Marist, when he recorded three goals and two assists for five points. Lomeli also broke the program record for goals in a game with four against Vermont.
Forster also broke Lomeli's season points record, with 28 to Lomeli's 21 in 2015. Forster's 13 assists were a new program record, topping
John Roach's seven helpers in 2015.
Marzullo set new single-season marks in ground balls (63) and caused turnovers (14).
