NEWARK, NJ—The NJIT men's fencing team will have 12 fencers representing NJIT in the 2016 Mid-Atlantic/South Regional Fencing Championships to be hosted by Moravian College in Easton, PA on March 12-13.
The men will have four athletes –
Henrique Marques (ranked #5),
Simon Rizell (ranked #10),
David Kong (ranked #12) and
Nicholas Concepcion (ranked #19) competing in the men's foil.
Marques, a sophomore from São Paulo, Brazil, went 15-7 this season. He undefeated against 4 out of the 8 schools he competed against this season, #3 Penn State, SHU, Vassar, NYU and placed 23rd in the 2015 Junior World Championships (out of 113 participants in his event).
He is currently ranked #2 on the Brazilian Olympic Team and needs to maintain his spot for one more competition to qualify for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio.
Rizell, the defending 2015 MACFA individual foil conference champion, from Gothenburg, Sweden, stands at 46-23 overall. He went undefeated against 8 schools this season including NYU, JHU, SHU, Vassar, MIT and Haverford.
He was also undefeated against 14 teams in the team round and then continued to win the event. Freshman
Greg Puccio and Rizell were the only two fencers to go undefeated during the entire MACFA conference championships.
NJIT has now won the individual foil conference championship for the past three years in a row. Rizell placed 18th at the 2015 NCAA National Championships and led the NJIT foil squad on the A-strip to become the 2016 MACFA Foil Champions.
In the men's epee competition, NJIT will have five athletes competing –
Eduardo Ezcurra (ranked #11),
Ryan Hrapsky (ranked #20),
Tristan Decker (ranked #23),
Gal Gluhic (ranked #23) and
Ian Constantin (ranked #34).
Ezcurra, a sophomore from Las Rozas, Madrid, combined for a 21-16 mark this season. He led the NJIT epee squad on the A-strip to become the 2015 MACFA Sabre Champions. Ezcurra won the individual epee title at the 2016 MACFA Conference Championships. He placed 14th in the 2015 NCAA National Championships
The men will have three athletes –
Greg Puccio (ranked #14), Cole DeGeorges (ranked #22) and
Tristan Quinton (ranked #24) competing in the men's sabre.
Puccio, a freshman from Warren, NJ, finished the season with a 53-28 over mark. He went undefeated against 9 schools including: #1 Columbia, Boston College, Brandeis and Haverford.
During the MACFA championships, he was undefeated against 14 schools in the team round and continued his win streak during the individual rounds to become the individual sabre conference champion. Puccio led the NJIT sabre squad on the A-strip to become the 2016 MACFA Sabre Champions.
