NEWARK, NJ—NJIT got a taste of the best women's tennis the Atlantic Sun Conference has to offer when the 2015 A-Sun champion North Florida women invaded Newark and defeated the Highlanders, 6-1, Thursday afternoon in the Naimoli Family Athletic and Recreational Facility.
The victorious Ospreys are 6-5 overall, while NJIT falls to 4-10. It was the first conference match for both teams.
North Florida captured the doubles point, taking a 6-3 win at number one and a 6-0 win at number three. NJIT led number two doubles 5-2, but the match was not finished since UNF had already clinched the point.
The visitors won five of the six singles contests in straight sets and NJIT got its lone point of the day when sophomore
Alba Rosas Garcia prevailed at #3 over North Florida's Rafaela Gomez, 2-6, 7-6 (2), 10-6.
For North Florida, Noemi Hemmerich was a winner at both first doubles and first singles; Michelle Valdez won at #2 singles and #3 doubles; and Mariella Calderon notched wins at sixth singles and third doubles.
NJIT will host Stetson in another Atlantic Sun Conference match on Saturday at 10 am in the Naimoli Center.
