Carly Berdan’s Goal Lifts Highlanders Past Jacksonville

MADISON, NJ – NJIT women's soccer collected their second ASUN Conference win with a 1-0 victory over Jacksonville on Sunday at Drew University's Ranger Stadium.

The Highlanders (6-7-2, 2-3-0 ASUN) lone goal came from senior Carly Berdan, her first game-winner of 2016.

Berdan tallied three shots in the first half alone, inching closer and closer to her goal in the 35th minute.  Highlanders Kaelyn Gamel touched the ball to a waiting Lizzy Wolfe who one-timed it to Berdan. Berdan took a touch and saw her opening firing a shot into the upper left corner of the goal from just outside the 18 yard box.

NJIT kept the shot advantage from the Dolphins (3-9-1, 1-3-1 ASUN) in the first half, edging the visitors 7-6.

The Highlanders kept up the pressure in the second half with three early opportunities on net, a close shot by Wolfe that was blocked, and two more shots from Arianna Gerber and Gamel that were saved by Dolphin keeper Sara Wicks.

In the 76th minute, Gerber gave the Highlanders their closest chance for goal number two, when she headed Melanie Zrno's corner kick into the crossbar that shot straight up and out of bounds. Gerber posted a game-high six shots.

The shots were even in the second half for each team with NJIT and Jacksonville posting seven apiece. The Highlanders ended the game with 14 shots over the Dolphins 13.

NJIT senior goalkeeper Karen David collected her fourth shutout of the season making five saves in the win, while Jacksonville's Wicks made six saves.

The Highlanders will host Kennesaw State on October 15 for their Senior Day game at 1pm at Kean University East Campus Facility.

Seven seniors will be recognized on Senior Day, David, Dana Schules, Berdan, Laniyyah Elam, Brittany Goulart, Julia Keebaugh and Jamee Simone.
