STONY BROOK, NY—NJIT is playing its first-ever men's lacrosse contest Friday afternoon, as the Highlanders visit Stony Brook on Long Island.
Men's lacrosse was announced as NJIT's 19th intercollegiate sport in December 2013 and
Travis Johnson was appointed as the first head coach. Lacrosse is the first startup varsity program for NJIT in the Division I era (began in 2006-07). As such, the new men's lacrosse program will begin by taking on opponents who are all in NCAA Division I.
Starting from the proverbial ground level, Johnson has been building non-stop since his appointment and has been joined in the process by assistant coaches
Brad Conlon,
Brian Tironi and
Jay Card.
The Highlanders are going into their first 12-game intercollegiate varsity schedule with a roster of 25 players, 23 of whom are freshmen, with one sophomore and one senior.
After visiting Stony Brook, where
Travis Johnson once served as an assistant coach (also coached at Penn State and at Mount Saint Mary's (MD) in Division I, the Highlanders will play four straight home games. The first-ever home opener is Saturday, February 28 vs. Quinnipiac at noon on Lubetkin Field at Mal Simon Stadium.
