Box Score JACKSONVILLE, FL—Jacksonville came from behind to defeat visiting NJIT in five sets, 3-2, Friday night, as the Dolphins rallied back from down 0-2 to secure the win in women's volleyball Atlantic Sun Conference action at Swisher Gymnasium.
Jacksonville (6-10, 3-1 A-Sun) was home Friday night after playing its first 15 matches on the road. The Highlanders (5-14, 1-3 A-Sun) took the first two sets from Jacksonville, 25-23 and 27-25. But the Dolphins roared back to take the next two frames comfortably, 25-13 and 25-15 forcing a fifth set. Jacksonville carried the momentum into the fifth set, jumping out to a 7-2 lead and never looked back securing the five-set victory 15-9.
Victorious Jacksonville was led on the attack by senior Emily Laskelle's match-best 21 kills. Jizzyan Gesualdo and Jessica Armstrong were the two most effective hitters in the match, as Armstrong made one error on 13 swings notching a .462 hitting percentage, while Gesulado had one error on 12 attempts, good for a .417 hitting percentage.
NJIT had two players in double-figures for kills—
Tess Albyn and
Danica Vukotic. The Highlanders most efficient set on attack, came in the opening set, hitting .207 (11 kills, 5 errors, 29 attempts).
Senior outside hitter
Danica Vukotic and sophomore middle Albyn, finished with a team-high 12 kills. Albyn posted a .318 hitting percentage with five errors on 29 swings. Senior
Nina Vukotic chipped in 9 kills from the right side.
Freshman setter
Emily Krachenfels posted a team-best 25 assists for NJIT, while Jacksonville setter Gesualdo finished with a match-high 41 assists.
Jacksonville had a 6-3 edge in service aces, paced by five from libero Mayara Prestes. NJIT's Krachenfels recorded two aces.
On the floor, each team had three players with double-figure totals in digs. NJIT freshman libero
Adriana Nieto's 20 digs led the match, followed by
Nina Vukotic (14) and Krachenfels (11).
Prestes, the Dolphins libero and setter Gesualdo led the team with 17 digs each, while Kelly Koop just missed notching a double-double with 11 digs and 9 kills.
Jacksonville led in front of the net, with Ana Nieto-Gomez's match-best 8 blocks (1 solo, 7 assisted) and Gesualdo and Koop notched 3 (3 assisted).
NJIT, which only had one block solo, got 3 block assists from
Danica Vukotic and 2 from Albyn and
Anneka Harris.
The Highlanders will return to action on Sunday at North Florida, also in Jacksonville, for a 1 pm contest.
