Post Game Interview
NEWARK, NJ—Visiting Delaware State scored a goal in each half and the victorious Hornets notched their first shutout of the season in a 2-0 women's soccer victory over NJIT Tuesday night on Lubetkin Field at Mal Simon Stadium.
Delaware State (4-8-1) broke a scoreless tie in the 33rd minute on a penalty kick goal by Hornet senior Danielle Valente. The pk was awarded when another Hornet senior, Julia Bossert, went down in the penalty area, drawing a whistle from the referee. Valente's goal was her first of the season.
Bossert played a big part in her team's second goal, sending a long lead pass into open space, where a streaking Bri Musco ran onto it and fired the ball past NJIT goalkeeper
Samantha Bersett on a fast-breaking attack in the 51st minute.
Sophomore goalkeeper Michelle Lammers wasn't tested often in shutting out NJIT (2-9), as the Highlanders put three shots on goal out of their overall total of eight. Delaware State took 10 shots, with NJIT's Bersett making four saves.
The three on-target shots for NJIT came from three different players—
Alex Adam,
Arianna Gerber, and
Neema Liverpool.
One of the best scoring opportunities for the Highlanders came late in the opening half with NJIT trailing 1-0.
Dana Schules, a back was working in the attack and took a header that went just wide in the 44th minute. Gerber's shot in the 66th minute was the only NJIT attempt in the second half that required Lammers to make a save.
The victory over the Highlanders gives Delaware State a modest two-game winning streak, as the Hornets prevailed 2-1 at home over Mt. St. Mary's in their previous game on September 27.
For NJIT, the game vs. Delaware State was the final non-conference opponent of 2015. The Highlanders will play their remaining five regular season games in the Atlantic Sun Conference, beginning with a weekend trip to Jacksonville, FL. The Highlanders will face North Florida on Friday at 7:30 pm and then Jacksonville on Sunday at 1 pm.
