PHILADELPHIA—The NJIT men's and women's fencing teams competed at the Philadelphia Invitational this weekend, with results highlighted by a victory for the NJIT men over North Carolina.
The NJIT men went 3-2 with victories over UNC (21-6), Lafayette (18-9) and Drew (22-5), while dropping a close decision to #10 Duke (13-14) and #8 Penn (7-20).
Freshman
Eduardo Ezcurra swept UNC, #10 Duke and #8 Penn to go undefeated in epee (9-0), while
Henrique Marques led the foil squad with a 7-2 record and 3-0 in epee. Classmate
Gal Gluhic recorded a 10-5 mark on the epee strip going 3-0 against top-ranked UNC and Duke.
Freshman
Alex Hill went 8-7 on the epee strip and posted NJIT's only saber victory against #10 Duke.
The NJIT women picked up a pair of wins against Haverford (14-13) and Drew (15-12), while falling against North Carolina (6-21), Cornell (3-24) and FDU (12-15).
Freshman
Julia Garcia went 10-2 in epee and 3-0 in foil for the Highlanders, while
Julia Aronov finished with a 10-4 mark in epee.
Jule Shigihara went 7-5 on the foil strip, while
Kaelyn Gamel combined for a 2-1 score over Haverford that was instrumental in the Highlanders' 14-13 win over Haverford.
NJIT will return to action on Sunday, February 1 when the Highlanders face Brown, Yeshiva, Hunter, Boston College and Brandies at MIT.
