NEWARK, NJ— Junior Carly Tice scored the only goal for either side in a 1-0 women's soccer victory for Fairleigh Dickinson Sunday afternoon over NJIT on Lubetkin Field at Mal Simon Stadium.
The goal for Tice, her fourth of the season, came in the 25th minute and lifted the Knights to a 7-3 record on the season, with wins in each of their last three games. NJIT is 2-10, with seven losses by a margin of one goal, including three in overtime.
Visiting FDU, a team that has scored as many as eight goals in a game and had a combined seven in its previous two contests, had an 18-4 advantage in total shots, but the shots on goal were just 3-2 in favor of the Knights, who also hit the post a few minutes before scoring their goal Sunday.
Fairleigh Dickinson's junior goalkeeper Felicia Burr made two saves in posting a clean sheet, while NJIT junior keeper
Samantha Bersett also made two saves in a strong game in goal.
Fairleigh knocked on the door from the start and put on sustained pressure about 20 minutes in. Tice hit the post with a shot in the 21st minute and a bit later, Katey Arathoon took a close shot that NJIT's Bersett got a piece of, deflecting the shot over the end line for an FDU corner kick.
Arathoon took the corner kick and her serve out of the left corner found Carly Tice open in front, where the junior finished for what would be the game's only goal at 24:23.
Bersett made a big play that did not go in the books as a save, but it likely prevented another goal in the 53rd minute. After an NJIT defender gave away the ball in her own goal area, Bersett was the only Highlander between the ball, two FDU attackers and the goal. The junior keeper alertly came off her line and slid hard at the ball, breaking up a Knight pass attempt and clearing the ball back outside the goal area.
The Highlanders got a decent opportunity in the 60th minute when junior
Alex Adam was dragged down just outside the FDU penalty area. Given a free kick from 19 yards, the Highlanders hit the first try into the FDU wall and the try on the rebound spun wide right.
NJIT had a last-gasp opportunity in the final minute, when it was awarded a corner kick.
Madeline Griep sent the kick out of the right into a crowd in front. The initial try in heavy traffic resulted in a rebound, with the ball dribbling back out to
Jaclyn Ward, whose 15-yarder sailed high over the crossbar 14 seconds from time.
NJIT will return to action on Wednesday at 7 pm when the Highlanders visit LIU Brooklyn.
