BROOKLYN, NY – A goal by LIU Brooklyn's Madison Gomez in the 14th minute was all the Blackbirds needed in a 1-0 women's soccer win over visiting NJIT Wednesday night.
The Blackbirds enhanced their record to 2-9 with the win on the Gomez goal. Teammates Sydney Ciufo and Lucy Gunton-Jones were credited with assists on the game-winner.
The overall shots were close (11-9 for LIU) and each goalkeeper, the Blackbirds' Jessica Montrose and NJIT junior
Samantha Bersett, recorded two saves on the night. Wednesday's shutout was the first of the season for LIU Brooklyn's junior keeper Montrose.
NJIT (2-11) suffered its eighth one-goal loss of the year and its fourth 1-0 defeat.
The Highlanders put pressure on LIU early on, taking six of their nine shots for the night in the first half.
However, Gomez scored her second goal of the season for LIU when she capitalized on the Blackbirds' second shot of the game, scoring on a bicycle kick just outside the left side of the net. Gomez led LIU with four shots.
NJIT junior forward
Kaelyn Gamel led all players on the field, taking a total of six shots.
The Highlanders, who have played five of their last six games on the road, will be off for more than a week, returning for a home game against Delaware State on Friday, October 10 at 7pm. It will be the Highlanders Senior Night where they will celebrate their five seniors--
Megan Dellavalle,
