NEWARK, NJ-- The NJIT Men's Swimming & Diving team hosted Montclair State for what turned out to be an exciting first home meet of the spring semester. With six races being decided by less than .5 seconds, the Highlanders found themselves on the losing side of the 120-85 decision.
Tops swims included sophomore
Brian Capozzola placing 1
st in the 50 yard freestyle and the 100 yard freestyle, 21.58 and 47.29, respectively. Sophomore Rick Seffrin placed 2
nd in the 1000 yard freestyle, 10:09.04 and 100 yard breaststroke, 1:05.02
Additional highlights include freshman
Anthony Czar placing 2
nd in the 200 yard freestyle, 1:46.47 and 500 yard freestyle, 4:58.71.Â
Freshman
Michael Sungurov placed 2
nd in the 200 yard individual medley, 2:05.13 and 100 yard backstroke, 58.55. Senior
Victor Razuk also placed 2
nd in the 100 yard butterfly with a time of 56.83.
Several season bests were accomplished including freshman Joseph Pedo in 50 and 100 yard freestyle and freshman
Adam Bransky in the 100 yard butterfly.
The 400 yard freestyle relay placed 1
st with a time of 3:17.25. The relay consisted of Sungurov, Razuk, Czar and Capozzola also claiming a seasonal best for the Highlanders.
In diving news, sophomore
David Schmidt competed for the Highlanders at this weekend's Stag Diving Invitational hosted at Fairfield University. Schmidt broke his own records for both the 1 meter and 3 meter diving events with scores of 157.85 and 145.90 respectively.
The Highlanders will take a much needed break from their grueling past weekend and will return to action this Saturday, January 25
th, at the Fleisher Athletic Center on NJIT's campus against Fairfield  at 1pm. At the meet the team will commemorate their graduating seniors.
