SMITHFIELD, RI- The NJIT Men's Swimming & Diving team traveled to Smithfield, Rhode Island competing against Saint Francis Brooklyn and Bryant. The Highlanders beat Saint Francis Brooklyn (136 – 126), but fell short against Bryant, (118 – 144).
Sophomore
Brian Capozzola and freshman
Anthony Czar led the Highlanders sweeping the freestyle events against both opponents.
Capozzola placed 1st in the 50 yard freestyle, 100 yard freestyle and 200 yard freestyle with times of 21.46, 47.91 and 1:47.03, respectively. In addition Czar placed 1st in the 500 yard freestyle swimming a 4:54.73 and 1st in 100 yard backstroke with a time of 56.16.
Czar also teamed with sophomore
Richard Seffrin to swim a 1-2 finish in the 1000 yard freestyle with times of 10:10.12 and 10:13.60, respectively. Seffrin also had a great meet placing 2nd in the 200 yard breastroke with a time of 2:15.90 and 2nd again in the 200 yard Individual Medley with a time of 2:02.51
Additional highlights from the Highlanders included sophomore
Dennis Popov placing 3rd in the 200 yard butterfly with a time of 2:07.80.
Rounding out the day and securing the win for the Highlanders against Saint Francis was with the 1st place finish in the 200 yard freestyle relay. Swam by freshman
Michael Sungurov, senior
Victor Razuk, Czar and Capozzola with a time of 1:30.05 was the narrow 0.85 second win over Saint Francis. This time reset the seasonal best for the Highlanders.
Coach
Michael Lawson commented: "Today's meet was not an easy one. Our training after our trip to Florida has not gotten any easier as we are nearing the final stages before heading to Championships in Tennessee. However, my swimmers dug deep to secure the victory."
NJIT will return to action on Monday, January 20 when the Highlanders host Montclair State at the Fleisher Athletic Center at NJIT starting at 6pm.
