NEWARK, NJ—NJIT men's basketball plays its first January home game on Monday night, when the Highlanders host City College of New York in a 7 pm contest in the Estelle and Zoom Fleisher Athletic Center.

The Highlanders, who played seven home games between November 23 and December 21, played four road games since December 23. They have not played a game of any kind since topping Saint Francis University in Loretto, PA, on January 4.

After hosting CCNY, the Highlanders will go back on the road for four more consecutive away games, which will take them through until January 29.

Matt Provence, voice of the Highlanders, will have all the play-by-play action of the meeting between NJIT and CCNY live here on www.NJITHighlanders.com. Matt's coverage begins at least 15 minutes before tipoff.

City College, based in Manhattan, competes in NCAA Division III as a member of the City University of New York Athletic Conference.

The Beavers will come to NJIT having won their previous game, a 69-65 CUNYAC victory over Lehman College over the weekend on Saturday.

Anthony Lewis, a 6-foot-2 forward, is averaging a strong double-double, with 21.2 points and 10.1 rebounds per game. The junior has had double-doubles in three of the last four games and in five games total. He actually has more offensive rebounds (53) than defensive rebounds (48), a rarity.

Lewis opened the season with 34 points and 14 rebounds, shooting 16-for-21 in a game against The College of New Jersey. He also had 33 points and 18 rebounds this season against St. Joseph's of Brooklyn.

Freshman guard Khalil Hamer is off to a fine start in college, averaging 12.8 points and 6.2 rebounds. Hamer was named CUNYAC Rookie of the Week on January 7 after he put up 25 points, 11 rebounds and three steals vs. St. Joseph's. Guard Che McCoy is averaging 11.3 points and 5.5 assists, but he has missed the last four games.

As great an asset as any for CCNY is veteran coach Tom Green, who is in his third year at the helm for the Beavers. Before that, he was head coach for 26 years at Fairleigh Dickinson, serving from 1983 to 2009 with 407 wins and 351 losses. The winningest coach in FDU history and the all-time wins leader in Northeast Conference history, Green led FDU to seven 20-win seasons and into four NCAA Division I national tournaments.

NJIT and CCNY met as Division III programs in 1986-87 and the Highlanders won, 108-67. Last season, on December 22, 2012, the teams met again and the Highlanders, now in Division I, prevailed 71-43. Three NJIT players reached double-figure scoring, led by 14 from then-senior Chris Flores. The only double-figure scorer from that game who is still with NJIT was Ky Howard, who notched 13 points.

For CCNY, Lewis, the star of this year's team, collected 12 points in the loss to NJIT. Brandon Reeves, who is not on this years roster, led the Beavers with 14 points and 6 rebounds.

NJIT, which is looking for back-to-back victories after topping Saint Francis 64-56 just over a week ago, is getting 16.5 points per game from freshman guard Damon Lynn and 12.8 points and a team-best 5.9 rebounds from sophomore post player Terrence Smith.

Lynn has made 59 shots from 3-point distance (3.7 per game; 9th in Division I) and Smith is shooting nearly 59 percent (93-for-158) from the field. Both players are shooting over 81 percent at the foul line, which is true of three other Highlanders, as well.
