BROOKLYN HEIGHTS, NY—NJIT women's volleyball came up empty twice on Saturday, losing by matching 3-0 scores, first vs. Howard and then to Rider, on the second day of the St. Francis Brooklyn Terrier Invitational in Genovesi Center.
The Highlanders, who opened the tournament Friday night with a 3-0 loss to St. Francis Brooklyn, drop to 1-3 on the season. Howard raised its record to 4-3 after it swept NJIIT and Rider was 5-1 on the season after it swept the Highlanders. Rider finished as champion of the tournament, taking all three of its matches.
Howard took its sweep comfortably, taking NJIT, 25-16, 25-18, and 25-19. Rider took its three sets from the Highlanders, 25-18, 25-13, and 25-20.
In the Howard match, the victorious Bison hit .330 (40 kills, 7 errors, 100 attempts) as a team, led by freshman Katherine Broussard and junior Meagan Lagerleff, each of whom had identical totals of 11 kills and one error in 25 attempts (.400). Setter Stephanie Shultis had 34 assists and Howard had a 6-0 advantage in service aces, topped by two each for Broussard and Lagerleff.
On defense, Allyson Lods had 17 digs and Destinee Henderson had four blocks (two solo) for Howard.
For NJIT,
Danica Vukotic had 12 kills and two errors in 23 swings (.435).
Camilla Tinari added seven kills and
Julia Colombo six, but the rest of the team combined for just eight kills and made nine attack errors.
Grace Gao collected 28 assists.
On the floor, libero
Katie Goswick had 13 digs, supported by 10 from Vukotic, while the net defense produced just four block assists, all from different players.
In their second match of the day, the Highlanders had two different kills leaders—
Fran Edmondson (8 kills) and
Cathy Leung (6 kills)—in the sweep at the hands of Rider.
Gao had 22 assists at setter. After not getting an ace vs. Howard, NJIT had two against Rider, one from Leung and one from Tinari, On the other side, Rider served seven aces.
Goswick again led NJIT in digs with 15, while Edmondson led the individual blocking with two block assists.
Rider, which had a solid .286 team hitting percentage, spread the attack around, with Kayla Wong notching a team-best nine kills for the Broncs. Ashlee Amatulli had 25 assists and Brandie Hill added 12 for Rider. Alaina Piszczek served three aces to lead that department, followed by two from Amatulli.
Ten different Broncs had digs, paced by nine from Ryan Ackermann, and Nicole Moorman's three block assists led the winners at the net.
Next up for NJIT is a Wednesday night home match in the Estelle and Zoom Fleisher Athletic Center against Temple at 7 pm. The Owls will come to town with a 4-1 record, having swept to the championship of the Patriot Invitational at George Mason on Friday and Saturday. Temple was 19-11 a year ago,
