MOUNT VERNON, NY—The NJIT Highlanders got off to a quick start in their first game of the season against Fordham with three goals in the first period, only to see the lead disappear as the Rams came charging back with three goals of their own in the second.
Newcomers, Alex Fleischmann and Domenico (Nico) Crincoli got things going and veteran
Kyle Bendel added one to close out the first period scoring.
The second period was all Fordham. A power play goal and a lucky bounce helped the Rams regain their confidence and before long the game was tied going into the 3rd period.
NJIT regained the lead on a goal by Mike Criscitello in his first game, but Fordham answered on a strong play by Chris Zito as he picked the top corner from 50 ft away with a defenseman draped all over him. Both teams had their chances, but it was Fordham that scored last and went home with a 5-4 victory.
More newcomers got their names on the score sheet as assists on the 1st and 4th goal went to Matt Smeriglio and
David Ferrero and Freshman Goaltender Tom Pyrka stopped 18 shots on goal.
Fordham visits the Prudential Center on Sunday at 8:30 to complete the home & home weekend series.
