Women’s Volleyball Wins Fourth Straight; Sweeps Saint Peter’s 3-0

JERSEY CITY, NJ—The NJIT women's volleyball team won its fourth straight match ,sweeping Saint Peter's, 3-0, Wednesday evening at the Yanitelli Center.

In the first meeting between the two teams on September 4, NJIT scored a 3-0 win in three close sets.  The Highlanders won in straight sets Wednesday, 25-20, 25-23 and 25-18 improving to 6-10 overall while Saint Peter's drops its sixth straight, falling to 3-17 on the season.

NJIT sophomore Danica Vukotic led the match with 11 kills while adding 7 digs.  Julia Colombo and Valerie Carroll each notched 8 kills, while finishing with an impressive hitting percentage.  Colombo hit .538 on 8 kills, 1 error on 13 attempts while Carroll posted a .800 hitting percentage with 8 kills, no errors on 10 swings in the victory.

Sophomore Fran Edmondson piled up a match-high 30 assists, adding 8 digs and 4 block assists.  Edmonson has notched double-digit assists in the last nine out of 10 matches, including a high of 41 assists against Lafayette on October 4.

Defensively, senior Cathy Leung led the match with 12 digs  and NJIT libero Katie Goswick dug-up 10.  Danica Vukotic and Nina Vukotic each added 7 digs apiece.
The Highlanders held an 8-to-3 team blocking advantage, led by Colombo's 5 block assists and Leung and Edmondson with 4 apiece.

Saint Peter's was paced by Lauren Behrens' 10 kills and Kristina Baehr posted 25 assists and Laura Reinhart shared match-high honors with NJIT's Leung, recording 12 digs.

In the first frame, both teams traded points back and forth with Saint Peter's leading by two, 16-14.  The Highlanders, down two, scored the next six consecutive points, pulling ahead of the Peacocks, 20-16.  NJIT did not look back to earn the win 25-20.

In the second set, Saint Peter's jumped out to a 13-8 lead after two NJIT errors, resulting in a Highlander timeout.  Saint Peter's stayed ahead, extending the lead to six, 17-11.  The Highlanders battled back with a 6-0 run that knotted the set at 17 after a kill by Colombo.  The score remained close, with the Highlanders holding a two-point advantage 24-22 after a Saint Peter's attacking error.  NJIT would hold on for the win with a 25-23 victory.

In the final frame, the match saw seven ties, the final at 16 on a kill by NJIT's Colombo.  The Highlanders put together another rally, scoring the next six consecutive points for a 21-16 advantage and closed out the set with a kill by Carroll for a 25-18 victory.

NJIT will return to action on October 16 at 7pm when the Highlanders visit Manhattan.  The two teams last met on September 5, 2009 at the CCSU Blue Devil Invitational with the Highlanders sweeping the Jaspers in straight sets, 25-15, 25-19, 25-18.
