Women’s Tennis Earns 6-1 Victory Over Visiting Sacred Heart

NEWARK, NJ—The NJIT women's tennis team opened up the 2013 season with a convincing 6-1 decision over visiting Sacred Heart Saturday at The Naimoli Family Athletic and Recreational Facility.
 
The NJIT women won five out of six singles contests and swept the doubles competition to earn the victory.  The lone win for Sacred Heart came at fifth singles.
 
Doubles partners Ksenia Kuzmenko and Jana Luste started off the match with an 8-3 win at first doubles over Gabi Kaldan and Paige Olson.  Kuzmenko was a 6-3, 6-2 winner at first singles.
 
At second doubles, Carolina Zanotta and Natalia Melibeu, both natives of Brazil, teamed for a 8-6 victory over Katie DeRienzo and Lindsey Post.   Melibeu, competing at third singles won by identical scores 6-4, 6-4 while Zanotta earned a 6-2, 6-1 victory at fourth singles.
 
NJIT's Monika Graff and Hannelore MacDonald blanked Sacred Heart's duo at third doubles, 8-0.  Graff was a 6-2, 6-4 winner at second singles.
 
Highlanders' Martina Tripcovici won by identical scores, 6-0, 6-0 at sixth singles.
 
NJIT will return to action on Sunday when the Highlanders host Saint Peter's at 3:30pm at The Naimoli Family Athletic and Recreational Facility.
