WEST POINT, NY—The NJIT women's tennis team edged Army, 4-3, Friday evening in a come-from-behind win for the teams' 12
th straight victory of the season at Lichtenberg Tennis Center.
Army (12-6) earned the doubles point with victories at the second and third spot. NJIT (16-2) won at first doubles 8-4 as
Jana Luste and
Nina Mayevska topped Army's Della and Elle Taylor.
Monika Graff got things going for the Highlanders in the singles competition, as the junior evened the match at 1-1, with a straight set victory at third singles, 6-2, 6-0 over Margaret Illiev.
The Black Knights notched the next point of the match at second singles as Mayevska fell 6-1, 3-6, 6-4 to Army's Jamila Paul.
Freshman
Carolina Zanotta evened the match at 2-2 with a victory at fifth singles. Zanotta was downed in the first set to Della Taylor, 6-1, but bounced back in the next two frames for a 6-4, 6-2 victory.
The home team went ahead, 3-2, after Natalie Allen took NJIT's Luste in three sets, 6-3, 5-7, 6-1.
Sophomore
Ksenia Kuzmenko, competing at first singles for the Highlanders went the distance with Army's Erin Colton. Colton took the first set, 6-3, but Kuzmenko came back in the second set 6-1 and earned the point with a 7-6 (7-5) victory in the final frame knotting the score at 3-3.
The final point came down to sixth singles, with NJIT's
Martina Tripcovici and Army's Elle Taylor. The Black Knights took the first set, 6-4, but it was Tripcovici who came out on top scoring a 6-4, 6-2 victory to secure the come-from-behind win for the Highlanders.
The Highlanders will return to action on Saturday at The Naimoli Family Athletic and Recreational Facility when the team hosts Hofstra at 10am. The match was originally scheduled to be played at Hofstra but was moved indoors to NJIT due to the expected rain.
