WEST POINT, NY—Senior forward
Franco Gamero scored the game-winning goal in overtime with one second remaining on the clock, leading the NJIT men's soccer team over Army, 2-1, Wednesday night at Clinton Field.
The match, which was originally scheduled for Tuesday, October 30 but was rescheduled to Wednesday due to heavy rain and strong winds from Hurricane Sandy.
With the win Wednesday, the Highlanders improve to 9-8 on the season, with two matches remaining on the 2012 schedule while Army falls to 4-10-2.
The game-winning play came when senior
Christian Galindo crossed the ball into the box to classmate
Franco Gamero, who headed the ball past Army goalkeeper Winston Boldt with one second remaining in overtime. Galindo registered his second assist of the season.
The Highlanders senior forward also scored the first goal of the contest off a pass from sophomore
Marko Drljic. Gamero got behind the Army defense, finishing from 10 yards out in the 22
nd minute. Drljic notched his team-leading seventh assist of the season.
With Gamero's two goals this evening, the forward from Kearny, NJ, now holds the NJIT Division I record for career goals with 14 surpassing Eddie Romero's record of 13 (2004-05; 2009). Gamero also holds the NJIT Division I record for goals scored in a season with seven surpassing
Rahim Stennett (2009, 6 goals) and Erik Magnusson (2007, 6 goals) record.
Army knotted the contest in the 79
th minute with a nice pass from Cody Guerry to Josh Koeppe, who scored his fourth goal of the season from 12 yards.
Senior goalkeeper
Lars Maalen-Johansen made two saves in the victory while Black Knights goalkeeper Boldt notched three saves.
NJIT outshot the home team 14-to-10 and had a 10-to-5 advantage in corner kicks.
The Highlanders will return to action on Tuesday, November 6 at Adelphi in Garden City, NY. The match will begin at 7pm.
NJIT will close out the 2012 season at home on November 10
th at 7pm against Howard. The Highlanders will honor three departing seniors – Gamero, Galindo and Maalen-Johansen in pre-game ceremonies and recognize the NJIT Men's Soccer Alumni at halftime at Lubetkin Field at Mal Simon Stadium.
