STATEN ISLAND, NY—Senior Kaitlyn Llewellyn knocked home a rebound in the 87th minute, lifting Wagner to its third win in as many starts, 2-1, against visiting NJIT Tuesday afternoon.
The Seahawks held the Highlanders (0-2) without a shot or a corner kick in the opening half, but the only scoring was a Wagner tally near the mid-point of the half, an unassisted goal by junior Julie Vigliotti in the 21st minute.
Vigliotti, a small (5-feet even), but exceptionally quick player, has now played three career games against the Highlanders and scored a goal in each contest. She scored once in her team's 3-0 win over NJIT in 2009 and netted the only goal when the Seahawks beat the Highlanders last year, 1-0. Her goal last year was assisted by Llewellyn, who scored Tuesday's game-winner.
NJIT showed more offense in the second half, actually outshooting the home team, 6-5, over the last 45 minutes. The Highlander goal came from junior Gechi Ukaegbu, assisted by senior back Cielianna Pasiciel in the 59th minute. Ukaegbu scored on a break off of a nice pass from Pasiciel.
Ukaegbu's goal, the sixth of her career, was the first this year against Wagner, which had won its first two games by identical 1-0 scores (in the second overtime at Saint Peter's on August 21 and home against Marist in regulation on August 26),
The teams were locked in the 1-1 tie until less than four minutes remained in regulation. Wagner's Alyssa Azzinaro, a freshman, took a shot that was saved by NJIT keeper Anna Kornmuller, but when the ball stayed in play, Llewellyn capitalized to score the game-winner.
Kormuller finished the match with four saves, while Kate Marcy picked up the win in goal for the Seahawks by making one save.
The total shots favored Wagner, 11-6, while the shots on goal were 6-2 for the winners, who also had a 5-0 advantage in corner kicks in the game that was originally scheduled for Sunday, August 28, but was pushed back two days due to the weekend arrival of Hurricane Irene.
The Highlanders, having played their first two contests on the road, will come home for match on Friday night against Rider. That contest on Lubetkin Field at J. Malcolm Simon Stadium is set for a 7 pm start. Rider will bring a 1-1-1 record into the contest and has allowed one goal total in its three matches.
