STONY BROOK, NY – The NJIT women's tennis teams winning streak came to an end Saturday afternoon when the Highlanders faced Stony Brook and fell, 6-1.
The Highlanders streak began over Spring Break in Orlando, Florida. NJIT opened up play against Great West Conference opponent North Dakota and Liberty. In both matches the Highlanders fell but bounced back in its final match of the trip with a 6-1 victory over Florida A&M on March 17.
NJIT picked up two 5-0 wins in The Naimoli Family Athletic and Recreational Facility over Saint Francis (PA) and Hartford and scored three consecutive 6-1 victories over Saint Joseph's, Hofstra and Manhattan.
The Highlanders earned one point which came in the doubles contests as NJIT won at first and second doubles.
Nina Mayevska and Jana Luste were 9-8 winners at the first spot and Ksenia Kuzmenko and Hannelore MacDonald added a 8-4 win at second doubles.
Kuzmenko was the only Highlander to go three sets, which came at first singles against Stony Brook's Nini Lagvilava. Kuzmenko took the first set, 6-4, but was downed in the next two sets by identical scores, 6-2, 6-2.
The Highlanders will return to action on Sunday when the team hosts Sacred Heart.
