Mark Leiter, Jr. Takes Great West Conference Pitcher of the Week

Mark Leiter, Jr. was named Great West Conference Pitcher of the Week

NAPERVILLE, IL--Mark Leiter Jr., a sophomore right-handed pitcher for NJIT, is the latest Great West Conference Pitcher of the Week, in baseball awards announced by the conference office Tuesday afternoon.

Leiter was honored for his performance against the University of Hartford on April 2, when he pitched a complete-game, eight-inning, three-hitter in a 3-2 win for the Highlanders in the first game of a Saturday doubleheader.

Leiter allowed both runs in the second inning of the game that was scheduled for seven innings. Hartford got two hits in that frame and just one over the remaining six innings. Hartford got its final hit in the fourth inning and had just two baserunners—one on an error and one on a walk—after that.

Leiter is 1-1 early in his sophomore season after leading NJIT in innings pitched (81.1) and strikeouts (60), while sharing the team lead in wins (3), a year ago. He was a New Jersey College Baseball Association Division I All-Rookie honoree following the 2010 season.

The resident of Lanoka Harbor, NJ, came to NJIT after starring at Toms River North High School. He was named All-Ocean County first team by the Star-Ledger and second-team All-Shore by the Asbury Park Press following his senior year at Toms River North.
