POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. -- The NJIT baseball team erased an early four-run deficit and held off a late rally to defeat Marist, 11-9, on Tuesday afternoon.
The Red Foxes struck first with three runs in the opening inning and added another in the second to take an early 4-0 lead. The Highlanders began to chip away in the third when Lorenzo Camilleri doubled and later scored on an error.
The Highlanders broke through in the fifth inning when Connor Klock opened the frame with a single before Ty Sallie delivered a two-run double to cut the deficit to one. Camilleri followed with an RBI single to tie the game, and the Highlanders took its first lead of the afternoon on a ground ball that plated another run.
The Highlanders extended its advantage in the sixth inning as Sallie again came through with runners in scoring position, ripping his second two-run double of the day. An error later in the inning allowed another run to score, pushing the Highlanders' lead to 8-4.
The Highlanders continued to apply pressure in the seventh, adding two more runs on a Klock RBI single and miscue to build a 10-4 cushion. A sacrifice fly by CJ Wisniewski in the eighth extended the lead to 11-5.
The Red Foxes mounted a late push in the bottom of the eighth, scoring four runs to cut the deficit to two, however Becker Sybirski entered from the bullpen and recorded the final five outs to secure his first collegiate save and seal the mid-week victory for the Highlanders.
Sallie led the offensive charge with a standout performance, going 3-for-6 with four RBIs and three doubles, including a pair of two-run doubles. Camilleri added three hits and an RBI, while Klock finished 2-for-4 with two RBIs in relief behind the plate.
Out of the bullpen, Hayden Estes earned the win with 1.2 innings of work, allowing one run.
