CHICAGO – Fourth-seeded NJIT recorded two wins Saturday at the 2011 Great West Conference Women's Tennis Tournament sweeping Chicago State and Seattle, 4-0, advancing to the championship match on Sunday.
The Highlanders (16-8) will either face North Dakota or Texas-Pan American on Sunday at 8:00am (CT). NJIT fell 5-2 to North Dakota during the team's Spring Break trip to Orlando, Florida on March 15.
Texas-Pan American seeded No.2 in the tournament is the defending Great West Conference Champion.
NJIT 4, Seattle 0 (Final)
Seattle (9-15), which joined the Great West Conference in women's tennis this season, entered the tournament as the top seed and received a bye into the semifinals.
NJIT, winners of its last five matches, earned the doubles point with wins at second and third spot and claimed the match with victories at first, third and sixth singles.
Individual matches are to be halted as soon as one team achieves the points necessary to clinch a victory.
Freshmen doubles pair Ksenia Kuzmenko and Hannelore MacDonald recorded a 8-4 victory at second doubles followed by an 8-6 win by Ana Lidon and Monika Graff.
Kuzmenko and Graff won by identical scores at first and third singles, 6-1, 6-0 while MacDonald won in straight sets at sixth singles, 6-3, 6-1.
NJIT 4, Chicago State 0 (Final)
In the first match of the day for the Highlanders, NJIT blanked host Chicago State, 4-0. The Highlanders took two out of three doubles contests and three singles contests topping fifth-seeded Chicago State.
Doubles partners Kuzmenko and MacDonald were 8-3 winners at second doubles and Lidon and Graff won by default at third doubles.
Graff won in straight sets at third singles, 6-1, 6-0 while Martina Tripcovici and Megan Guidry won by default at fourth and fifth singles.
