WEST POINT
, NY
—The NJIT women's tennis team played two weekend matches on the campus of the United States Military Academy and the Highlanders came away with a split, losing to Army on Saturday and defeating Providence on Sunday.

Army, 13-2 in match play, with 10 straight wins, defeated the Highlanders, 6-1 (Army followed the NJIT win by beating Providence to achieve the listed record).

NJIT (5-5) bounced back on Sunday for a 7-0 win over Providence (2-4).

Against Army, the only winner for the Highlanders was Monika Graff, who took third singles from Annie Hang, 1-6, 6-3, 10-3.

However, the match was considerably closer than the 6-1 score might indicate on first glance.

Two other singles matches went to three sets, but Army won both. At second singles, Army's Jessica Ahn edged NJIT's Nina Mayevska, 6-3, 5-7, 10-8; and at fourth singles, Della Taylor of the Black Knights was a 6-7 (5), 6-3, 10-8 winner over Highlander Jana Luste..

Army took the doubles point, but second and third doubles were both tight, with the home team coming out on top in both, 8-6.

On Sunday against Providence, the Highlanders won all six singles and all three doubles in sweeping the Big East team.

First singles was tight, but NJIT's freshman Ksenia Kuzmenko prevailed over Marisela Aviles-Duron in three sets, 4-6, 6-3, 10-6. The Highlanders won the other five singles contests in straight sets.

In doubles, Luste and Mayevska combined for an 8-6 win at number one. Graff and Ana Lidon (who also won fifth singles) were 8-3 winners in the second slot and Kuzmenko and Megan Guidry took third doubles by the same score.

NJIT is off until its Spring Break trip, which begins on March 15 with an 11 am match against North Dakota in Orlando, FL.
