ORLANDO, FL – The NJIT men's and women's tennis teams wrapped up its Spring Break Trip Thursday evening. The NJIT women defeated Florida A&M, 6-1, as the Highlander men fell to Bucknell, 5-2.
Women's Tennis vs. Florida A&M, 6-1
The Highlanders won five of six singles spots and claimed the doubles point, improving to 6-7 on the season.
All five of the singles contests came in straight sets for the Highlanders. Florida A&M's only win came at sixth singles.
NJIT opened the day taking first and second doubles. Highlander pair Nina Mayevska and Jana Luste were 8-4 winners at first doubles while Ksenia Kuzmenko and Hannelore MacDonald followed with an 8-3 win at the second spot.
The straight-set winners for NJIT were: Kuzmenko over Britney Dean, 6-01, 6-1 at first singles; Mayevska over Alexis Brown, 6-1, 6-4 at the second spot; Monika Graff at third singles over Kathline Durden, 6-0, 6-4; Luste with a 6-0, 6-4 victory at fourth singles and MacDonald over Maria Gomez 7-6(9), 6-3 at the fifth spot.
Bucknell 5, NJIT 2 (Men's Tennis)
NJIT's Petr Rousar and Ike Kiro scored the only single wins for NJIT as Bucknell prevailed, 5-2, Thursday morning.
At first singles, Rousar defeated Bucknell's Gregg Cohenca in a three-set tilt, 6-7(5), 6-4, 7-6(8) while Kiro topped Josh Katten, 7-5, 7-6(1) at third singles. Bucknell swept the doubles competition.
Wednesday evening both teams fell to Liberty. The men were blanked 7-0, while the women were topped by Liberty, 6-1.
Liberty 6, NJIT 1 (Women's Tennis)
The NJIT women's tennis team earned its only point of the match taking two out of three doubles contests.
Mayevska and Luste, at first doubles topped Liberty's Cameron Richard and Alexandra Sheeran, 9-8(4). NJIT's Graff and Ana Lidon blanked Annisha Domenech and Jessie Boda, 8-0 at third doubles.
Liberty 7, NJIT 0 (Men's Tennis)
The NJIT men's tennis team fell to Liberty, 7-0, Wednesday. The closest match of the day came at second singles. Liberty's Tristian Stayt defeated NJIT's Tasca, 6-4, 6-4.
The Highlanders will return to action on Saturday when NJIT hosts Hartford at 9:00am in Brookdale Park in Montclair, NJ.
