FARMVILLE, VA
—Kelsey Pardue assisted on the first goal and scored the second for Longwood in a 2-0 home win for the Lancers against NJIT in non-conference women's soccer Sunday afternoon at Longwood's Athletics Complex.

Pardue, a sophomore, picked up her team-leading fourth assist, when she assisted senior Kacie Oliver in the 19th minute. The goal was the fifth of the year for Oliver, who stood alone with the team goal-scoring lead until Pardue picked up her own fifth goal, assisted by Nikki Glisson at 55:50.

Junior Kyra Byron needed two saves to earn her fourth shutout of the season for the Lancers (5-6-3). Freshman Amanda Murray made her second start in goal for NJIT (2-10) and was credited with six saves.

Longwood had a 13-4 lead in total shots and 8-2 in shots on goal, plus a 5-1 lead in corner kicks.

“It was disappointing,” said NJIT coach Sergio Gonzalez, whose team posted its first shutout victory of the year two days earlier, opening conference play with a 2-0 home win over Delaware State. “I thought we took a couple of steps backward today. We started slowly and then we defended better in the second half. But we didn't take good care of the ball when we won it.”

Longwood, which was in control from the outset, went ahead 1-0 in the 19th minute when Oliver took a through ball in the box from Pardue and finished the play at 18:53. The half ended with the Lancers on top, 1-0, reflected also in their 5-1 lead in shots.

Longwood doubled its lead to 2-0 in the 56th minute when Pardue took a feed into the box from Glisson and beat NJIT's Murray at 55:50. The hosts added to their lead in shots with an 8-3 margin over the final 45 minutes.

The last four games have seen the Highlanders alternate Friday night wins with 2-0 losses on Sunday afternoon (NJIT beat Saint Peter's on September 23, 2-1, and then lost to Saint Joseph's two days later, before this week's Friday win over Delaware State and Sunday's loss at Longwood). “On Sunday games, we have make sure we're sharp and we haven't been able to do that,” said Gonzalez.

NJIT, which played six straight games at home from September 11 to October 9, began a three-game stretch of away games at Longwood. Next up for the Highlanders is another non-conference road trip on Wednesday at 7 pm in Philadelphia at Penn.
