WASHINGTON
, DC
—Retha Koefoed's penalty kick in the second minute of the second overtime lifted Howard to a 2-1 win over visiting NJIT in the Great West Conference East Division women's soccer opener for both teams Sunday afternoon.

Howard (4-5 overall and 1-0 GWC East) never trailed on Sunday in winning its second straight and fourth in its last six after an 0-3 start.

The Bison got the only score of the first half when Cynthia Snyder scored from five yards out after a crossing pass from Jordan Brown in the 34th minute.

That one goal was all Howard needed for most of the match, but NJIT's Gechi Ukaegbu kept the Highlanders alive when she scored her first goal of the season off of a rebound with just 3:31 remaining in regulation.

The 1-1 score held up through a 10-minute overtime period, but Koefoed, the sophomore for Howard, converted the game-winning penalty kick at 101:19.

There were only 16 shots between the two teams in more than 101 minutes of soccer, with Howard attempting nine to seven for the Highlanders. Each goalkeeper, Howard's winning keeper, Cheyra Bell, and Sadie Mele of NJIT, made one save apiece.

NJIT, 1-8-1 overall and 0-1 GWC East, will step out of the conference and visit Lehigh on Sunday, October 3, at 1 pm.

Next week's game will be the first all-time meeting between NJIT and Lehigh in women's soccer. Lehigh is 4-1-1 this season.
