NEW YORK – After a two week break, the Highlanders returned back to the court for an EIVA Hay Division conference matchup at NYU but fell, 3-0, Tuesday evening at the Coles Sports Center.
The first and third sets were close as NYU came out on top each time, 32-30, 30-17, 30-28, improving to 6-17 overall, 2-6 in the conference.
NYU's Michael Ferragonio and Pattrick Dodd posted match-high honors with 14 kills apiece while Ferragonio led NYU defensively with 10 digs. Trevor Salter piled up a match-high 46 assists.
Freshman Christian Puszies was the only Highlander to post double-figures totals with 11 kills. Sophomore Adam Gustafson added five kills, six assists and nine digs for the visitors. Freshman Matthew Lui collected 18 assists.
In the first set, NYU took a slight advantage 10-7 on an NJIT error. The Highlanders bounced back and scored the next six points on a kill by Gustafson, to take a 13-10 lead. NJIT held a two-point lead until NYU's Ferragonio connected on a kill pulling the home team within one, 28-27. NYU tied the match at 28 and later took the lead 31-30 on a kill by Francis Hodgson. Hodgson and Salter recorded the final point of the set on a block assist for NYU.
NYU's offense was too much to handle in the second set, which saw the Violets hit .400 led by Dodd's five kills.
Both teams went back and forth in the final set, until NJIT's Kevin Van Oss knotted the set at 25. NYU scored the next two points, for a 27-25 lead. NJIT pulled within one-point of NYU on three different occasions, the final at 29-28, on a kill by Puszies. NYU scored the final point of the set for a 30-28 win.
NJIT will return to action on April 15 at Princeton.
