Highlanders #ProtectTheWEC; Undefeated Home Streak Continues

NEWARK, NJ — The No. 20 NJIT Highlanders extended their undefeated home streak with a 3–0 sweep of visiting Dominican (N.Y.) in non-conference men's volleyball action Friday evening inside the Joel and Diane Bloom Wellness and Events Center.

NJIT, winners of two straight, improved to 12–6 overall and remained perfect at home, moving to 9–0 inside the Joel and Diane Bloom Wellness and Events Center.

Freshman Gustavo Chrcanovic led the Highlanders with 12 kills while hitting an impressive .688. Setter Bruno Figueiredo directed the offense with 30 assists and added six digs. Freshman Andre Aleixo contributed eight kills and three service aces, while Wiktor Nowak recorded nine kills and five digs for a strong two-way effort.

Freshman Alex Heins posted a .750 hitting percentage with six kills on eight swings, while classmate Daniel Latkowski hit .545 with six kills on 11 attempts. Libero Diego Lopez anchored the defense with seven digs.

Neither team led by more than one point early in the first set until NJIT broke an 11–9 edge open with a four-point run to take a 15–9 lead, forcing a Dominican timeout. The Chargers responded by winning four of the next five points to trim the deficit to 17–13. Dominican later used a 3–1 run to cut the Highlanders' lead to 23–20, but NJIT closed the set with back-to-back points to claim a 25–20 victory and a 1–0 match lead.

The Highlanders controlled the second set from the outset, building a 7–4 advantage and extending it to 18–12. Dominican answered with a 3–1 run to close within four at 19–15, but NJIT responded with three straight points to stretch the margin to 22–15. The Chargers later pulled within five, but NJIT secured the set, 25–19, to take a 2–0 lead. The Highlanders were dominant offensively in the frame, hitting .625 with 17 kills, two errors and 24 attempts.

NJIT carried that momentum into the third set, opening with an 11–3 run. Dominican briefly slowed the surge with consecutive points to make it 11–5, but NJIT answered by scoring four of the next five to extend the lead to 15–6 and later 19–9. The Chargers mounted a small run late, winning four of five points to make it 23–14, but the Highlanders closed the match shortly after, capped by a kill from Aleixo to seal the 25–15 set win and the 3–0 sweep.
