Men’s Tennis Posts 2-1 Record at Dayton Invitational

DAYTON, OH – The NJIT men's tennis team competed at the Dayton Invitational, a two-day event this past weekend, posting a 2-1 record.

 

The two-day event featured Northern Kentucky, Belmont and host Dayton.  The Highlanders blanked Northern Kentucky, 7-0, Friday.  NJIT fell to Belmont 5-2 and bounced back for a 6-1 victory over Dayton Saturday.

 

The NJIT men recorded its third consecutive 7-0 victory Friday sweeping Northern Kentucky, winning all six singles matches and also swept the three doubles matches.

 

Saturday, Belmont swept all three doubles contests and picked up four out of six wins in the singles competition. 

 

Senior Stephen Erickson won at first singles in a three-set tilt, 6-3, 1-6, 6-0 over Belmont's Rodrigo Amaral.  At the sixth spot, Dimitri Athans captured the victory in straight sets, 6-4, 6-1 for NJIT's second point of the match.

 

The Highlanders raised its overall record to 7-2 with a convincing 6-1 win over host Dayton.  NJIT won five of the six singles matches and added wins at first and second doubles.

 

Cosmin Chiujdea and Diego Abreu teamed for an 8-5 win at first doubles.  Chiujdea was also a winner at fourth singles 6-2, 6-0.

 

Fraser Croad and Athans picked up an 8-3 win at second doubles.  Athans went the distance at fifth singles coming out on top 6-7, 6-3, 10-7.

 

The only win for Dayton was at sixth singles.

 

NJIT will return to action on February 28 when they visit Monmouth.
