SOUTH ORANGE, NJ -- New Jersey Institute of Technology lost on both ends of the Seton Hall Invitational in women's volleyball action Saturday, falling to Yale, 3-0 and Hofstra, 3-1.
Recognized on the all-Tournament team was NJIT sophomore Renata Pandolfo, who combined for 45 kills and 32 digs in the two-day tournament.
In the second match of the day for the Highlanders, Pandolfo produced a .281 hitting percentage on 18 kills, 6 errors in 55 attempts. Junior Baaba Hughes tallied 10 kills and a season-high 25 digs on the defensive end.
Setter Erica Schultz posted 34 assists as senior co-captain Sabrina Baby had a match-best 33 digs.
Hofstra's offense was led by Monica Knight with 17 kills and 19 digs. Following behind Knight was Anissa Whitney (13) and Taylor Moore (11). Setter Chrissey Cruz piled up a match-high 45 assists while Moore's 24 digs led Hofstra defensively.
The Highlanders had their most efficient offensive set in the second frame, committing just two errors on 43 swings and 12 kills.
Set two started off with the score being tied on several occasions and it was not until the score was in the mid-teens that the Highlanders had the extra push to take control with a 25-15 win.
In the first match of the day, Pandolfo registered her seventh double-double of the season posting a match-high 15 kills to go along with 10 digs but it wasn't enough to overcome the Bulldogs.
Bulldog's seniors Laurel Johnson and Cat Dailey led a 25-23, 25-18, 25-17 win sharing team-high honors with 12 kills picking up Yale's sixth victory of the season.
Freshman setter Kerry Clavadetscher piled up a match-high 28 assists while junior libero Kelly Ozurovich dug-up a match-high 28 digs. Yale had three other players reach double-figures in the digs category – Lydia Mailander (17), Katie Cordell (11) and Daiely (10).
NJIT's Hughes' added 13 kills and 14 digs, notching her first double-double of the season for the Highlanders.
Baby led NJIT with 19 digs while three different Highlanders recorded 10 digs apiece, seniors Schultz and Hornstein and all-Tournament honoree Pandolfo. Schultz tallied 27 assists.
NJIT's closest set was the first frame, which ended 25-23 in favor of Yale. The Highlanders had broken a 20-20 tie with two straight points. But with NJIT leading, 22-20, the Bulldogs rallied for a four-point spurt that lifted Yale to a 24-22 advantage. NJIT then gained one point before Yale's Dailey recorded set point with a kill.
The Highlanders return to action on Friday when they kickoff their conference play against Texas-Pan American. The match will be played at Houston Baptist University starting at 5:00pm (CT). NJIT will take on Houston Baptist on Saturday at 2:00pm (CT).
